Hale Nana Kohola

Spectacular Estate for your very private vacation

There is no more luxurious home in the quaint beach town of Puako for experiencing the beauty, majesty and serenity of Hawaii. From the third-story whale-watch tower to the 46-foot infinity pool, this just-completed architectural masterpiece offers comfort, elegance and virtually every form of relaxation and recreation you could desire on the Big Island. Set right off a rare parcel of sandy beach, you’ll be steps away from kayaking and snorkeling among sea turtles above the coral reefs. Revive yourself in the ocean or quiet your mind by simply bathing in the sun and digging your toes into the warm sand, swinging in a hammock, or lounging in the pool, which is large enough for a good swim or a gentle paddle. Beautifully designed and appointed with antique Indonesian artwork and crafts, Hale Nana Kohola is landscaped to create an oasis of peaceful and gracious living. And, with 360-degree views of land and sea from the whale-watch retreat you have the perfect location for watching the humpback whales jump, breech and play in their winter breeding ground. Year-round, you’ll find no better view of the spectacular Kohala Mountains, Maui and its majestic volcano, Haleakala—from sunrise over Mauna Kea to breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

Arriving at Hale Nana Kohola, inside the gated walls, you face the magnificent multi-level entryway graced with broad steps of mahogany, balconies and strutted overhangs above, with lush tropical plantings all around. On the landing, touch the Thai prayer house for auspicious beginnings, walk under the antique Indonesian carved canoe and through the hanging twisted-root sculpture portal to the vast lanai (deck). There you’ll gaze at an inset palm garden complete with serene Buddha statue, the large curvaceous infinity pool and on to the grassy strip—scattered with stark kiawe trees—which leads to the sandy beach. Look up to your left to one of the balconies offering stunning views of Maui, the North Kohala Mountains and the unforgettable sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Turn right and into the grand yet comfortable living area—for gathering, cooking, eating, watching the ocean, the pool or the flat-screen television. Cathedral ceilings with skylights keep you connected to the brilliant daytime skies and densely numbered stars of night on the Hawaiian island so dedicated to the study of astronomy that minimal night-time lights island-wide provide star-gazing unrivaled in the modern world.

The beautiful design and intelligent layout of the 4500-square-foot Hale Nana Kohola is matched by the exquisite attention to detail throughout. With two master suites, two guest bedrooms with their own baths, a media room with a bath, this home easily accommodates eight adults and up to two children four years or older.

The open living area which segues seamlessly to the huge lanai creates a wealth of space for relaxation and solitude as well as for gathering and celebration of time together. The woodwork and cabinetry are mahogany, the flooring bamboo. Kitchen counters are unique polished cement with fossil inlays, integral sink and room to spare for gourmet spreads of all kinds. Two refrigerators and a wine-storage refrigerator plus two Fisher-Paykel dishwasher drawers and top-of-the-line appliances, cookery, dishware and crystal complete the picture.

The gracefully curving central stairway floats to the aerie office space conveniently near the heart of the home yet private and pleasant, complete with Sony Vaio, printer, high-speed internet and WiFi (wireless internet) throughout the house. You’ll find plants throughout the house and walkways that connect the main house with master suites and guest quarters, as well as decorative surprises in nooks and corners. If the beach and ocean are not sufficient entertainment, Hale Nana Kohola offers the best of electronic sound and viewing: cable television with high-definition DVR in the media room with a top-of-the-line surround-sound system, DVD player and video library, a multi-zone sound system in each room, CD player, multiple iPod docking stations and six flat-screen TVs!
