Hale Puako

Hale Puako

Tucked unobtrusively behind the historic Hokuloa Church, Hale Puako is one of the original Puako seaside homes—owned and loved by the same family for over 30 years. Savor some time, as they have, on this half acre of paradise, surrounded by a lush, green landscaped yard, coconut palms, and a stunning view of Puako Bay. From inside the home or out on the lanai, you can watch the sailboats moored in the bay or the turtles basking on the lava rocks. Step from the yard to the water’s edge for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or standup paddle-boarding.

Perfectly sited for dramatic views and private access from the yard to the ocean, this double A-frame home sleeps six in one of the best seaside locations in Puako. Rough-hewn vaulted ceilings with tall windows frame views of Maui, the Kohala Mountains and Puako Bay. Relax in one of several outdoor choices: a front lanai, or a wind-protected sun bathing deck. Watch your children play in the grassy yard shaded by mature trees and shrubs. The balcony, part of the separate master suite, offers private viewing of Hawaii’s spectacular Pacific sunsets. You’ll be within walking distance of the charming Puako General Store and handy to excursions to Waialea Bay and Hapuna Beach, often rated among the world’s best beaches.

Made up of two structures, Hale Puako offers convenience as well as privacy. The original open-plan A-frame structure includes a full kitchen with sea foam-tile counters, living room, dining nook, full bath and ocean-view loft with twin beds (or one king). Gaze at the moon and stars through overhead skylights above your comfortable queen-size bed in the second bedroom. Throughout, you will appreciate the collected artwork, coral and shells, folk crafts, petroglyphs, tiles and books that make the décor both homey and Hawaiian. Hale Puako’s site captures the sea breezes, and its sliding doors, ceiling fans, jalousie windows and louvered wood-slat window coverings make the most of those breezes. The front deck is a perfect extension of this comfortable living area.

Hale Puako’s second structure, added more recently, is another A-frame situated almost perpendicularly to the original, creating a large, protected lanai with plenty of seating for oceanfront lounging and dining. Inside, you’ll find the master suite, which faces the open ocean with a more westerly view toward Maui. Here, too, the vaulted ceiling and second-floor loft provide memorable views. You’ll enjoy the privacy of this separate suite, complete with a brand-new California-king bed, full bath, and private oceanfront balcony. The loft is the perfect space for the home’s office—available for those who cannot escape work entirely—with high-speed internet access and a fax machine.
